課程介紹(課程宗旨、先備知識等):

“Western History, Symbolism, and Art through the Eyes of the Tarot Deck"— an exploration into one of the most fascinating and multifaceted decks of cards ever created. In this course, we will follow scholars and mystics through the Tarot’s history and delve into the rich imagery and meaning behind four distinct decks of cards. This course will guide you through the Major and Minor Arcana, with a particular emphasis on the symbolism present in the art and how each card embodies universal concepts. As we explore, you will enhance your vocabulary, developing your understanding of English and its usage through these mystical images and secret symbols.

《塔羅牌中的歷史、語言和藝術》這門課程將探索人類歷史上最具魅力且多層次的卡牌之一。課程中,我們跟隨過往學者的腳步,回顧塔羅牌的歷史,深入探討四副不同卡牌中的豐富圖像、象徵意義及對西方歷史的指涉。本課程將引導同學認識大小秘儀卡牌的意義和學者的解讀,特別強調牌卡藝術中的象徵主義,以及每張牌如何體現普世概念。在探索的過程中,同學會得到豐富的英文詞彙,並透過這些神秘圖像與隱藏符號,增進你對英語及其運用的理解。(全英文授課)

       Overview of the Tarot Deck: History, Usage, and Structure.

       Introduction to Symbolism: Definition of symbolism and its general use in the Tarot.

Session 2: The Tarot Scholars

       Rachel Pollack, Arthur Waite, Crowley, …

       Their background, qualifications, and the context within the Tarot

Session 3: Introduction to the Decks

The Waite - Smith, The Handal, The Thoth, The Hermetic Tarot

Session 4: The Major Arcana 1 - The Fool’s Journey ( cards 0- 5)

       Deep dive into the Major Arcana

       Explore the core themes, archetypes, and basic symbolism in the 4 different decks.

Session 5: The Major Arcana 2—Symbols of Transformation ( cards 6 -11 )

       Deep dive into the Major Arcana

       Explore the core themes, archetypes, and basic symbolism in the 4 different decks.

Session 6: The Major Arcana 3—The Fall ( cards 12 - 16 )

       Deep dive into the Major Arcana

       Explore the core themes, archetypes, and basic symbolism in the 4 different decks.

Session 7: The Major Arcana 4— The Ascension  ( cards 17 - 21 )

       Deep dive into the Major Arcana

       Explore the core themes, archetypes, and basic symbolism in the 4 different decks.

Session 8: Minor Arcana; the Four Suits - Cups

The symbolism of the Cups, their meanings, and distinctions among each deck.

Session 9: Minor Arcana; the Four Suits - Wands

The symbolism of the Wands, their meanings, and distinctions among each deck.

Session 10: Minor Arcana; the Four Suits - Swords

The symbolism of the Swords, their meanings, and distinctions among each deck.

Session 11: Minor Arcana; the Four Suits - Pentacles

The symbolism of the Pentacles, their meanings, and distinctions among each deck.

Session 12: Court Cards - The Symbolism of Characters 1

Knights and Pages - symbolism, roles, personalities and character archetypes and how they are shown in each deck.

Session 13: Court Cards - The Symbolism of Characters 2

Queen and King - symbolism, roles, personalities and character archetypes and how they are shown in each deck.

Session 14: Tarot Art—Colors and Motifs

The role of color, shapes, and recurring motifs in Tarot symbolism. What do colors like red, blue, or gold represent?

Session 15: Numerology of the Tarot, Correlation and Representation

The association of numbers with universal principles and archetypes

Session 16: Esoteric Symbolism and the Occult Tradition

The role of esoteric traditions like alchemy, astrology, and Kabbalah in Tarot symbolism.

How alchemical symbols and astrological signs are integrated into Tarot.

Session 17: Tarot and the Psychological Symbolism

Carl Jung’s concept of archetypes and how it relates to the symbolism in Tarot.

Tarot as a Mirror of the Self: The psychological symbolism found in cards like The Hermit and The Moon.

Session 18: How Tarot is Used and the Deck of Cards

How to use a Tarot deck as a tool for introspection, and how to play basic games.
